1. Why SMEs, especially Start-ups, Micro and small enterprises need urgent help to overcome the hardship time of COVID-19 pandemic?

• 72.8% of SMEs relaying on internally generated funds, personal saving or from shareholders to finance their business operations

• 76.1% of the microenterprise solely depending their own internal funds and personal saving to finance their business

• Cash flow is the lifeblood of SMEs, particularly start-ups, micro and small enterprises. With dramatic decline in demand for goods and services, and limited financial resource to access, SMEs’ cash flow and survival are at stake

2. What is the main purpose of financing for SMEs?

• 79.8% of SMEs financing are meant for working capital, that is to cover their daily operation expenses, including fixed cost like salaries, rental etc.

• 65.6% of SMEs financing are utilised for purchasing or renting machinery, equipment, vehicle, computer software and hardware, land or building

• These financing is crucial for the survival of SMEs

3. Which segments are vulnerable to demand and economic shock?

• Majority of the SMEs are microenterprises, constituting 76.5% of total SMEs in Malaysia, while small-sized SMEs formed 21.2% of the total SME establishments.

• SMEs are highly concentrated in the services sector, which accounted for 89.2% of total SME establishments.

• Majority of SMEs in the service sector are predominantly in the wholesale & retail trade services, followed by food & beverages services and transportation & storage services
